What is the maximum group size in your trip?
We try to keep our groups to less than 15 people with a minimum of 2 people.
Can I join in your group trek?
You can join our scheduled group departures if there is a seat available. If it does not fit your schedule or if the seat is not available, we can arrange a special trek for you.
Can I travel alone?
It is possible to travel alone in popular destinations in Nepal, Bhutan and India. However, the restricted areas in Nepal and Tibet generally require a minimum of 2 people to acquire permit. But special arrangement can be made. Our trip costs for Tibet are designed based on double occupancy and shared vehicles, the costs may increase for solo travel.
How do I pay Tailored Treks & Expedition?
We prefer you to make full payment in advance before you arrive in Nepal, but if you prefer to make final payment while you arrive in Nepal, we will accept a US$500 per person advance deposit to confirm your reservation. You may pay the balance in cash or Traveler’s Cheque in Nepal.
Is Nepal safe? What is the Maoist situation in trekking areas?
The Maoists have accepted to be part of the democratic government through a historic peace agreement in 2007 monitored by the United Nations. There are few cases of donation requests by people affiliated with Maoists in some areas, but tourists have not been harmed. However, your safety is our number 1 priority and we will take every possible precaution to make your trip a safe one.
How long have you been working in this field?
We have been working in the field of trekking and travel in the Himalayas for more than a decade. Our guides and managers all have extensive experience and knowledge in their field.
What are the types of trip that you offer?
We offer various ranges of short, easy one week treks to 3-4 week adventure trekking and overland travels in sacred and breathtaking destinations of Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. We also offer additional adventure activities such as mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, jungle safaris and mountain flights.
Do I need to compromise comfort in adventure travel?
With the development of facilities in tourist areas all over the world, in fact, adventure travel and physical comfort can work in parallel with each other. In popular tourist areas, you will have comfortable guesthouses and restaurants all along the trip. In some remote and less traveled areas, these might not exist, but in our organized group treks we will carry all the facilities to make you comfortable. This includes comfortable tents and mattresses, hot showers, excellent meals, and safety gears and communication sets to make your trip safe and comfortable.
What is the maximum weight allowed on domestic flights?
The normal weight limit is 40 lbs
How many extra days should I allow in case of flight cancellation?
If you are flying to and from a remote mountain airstrip like Lukla, Jomsom, Simikot, Taplejung and Dolpo, you should keep at least two spare days before your departure for home.
What do I have to bring on the trip?
Your camping gears such as tents and cooking gears will be provided by us. In addition to this, you are suggested to bring your own personal gears. Please go to equipment and gear on our web site.
Are camping gears available in Kathmandu?
Yes, there are numerous trekking shops in Kathmandu and Thamel in particular. You can easily rent or buy items like sleeping bags, down jackets, rucksacks and duffel bags, both new and used.
How do I make communication from the trekking areas?
Telephone communications are available in most areas. But besides the major cities in Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan, there is no reliable internet access in remote trekking areas. While you are in these remote areas, we will carry satellite communications for emergency purposes only.
Do I need trekking and travel permit?
The government of Nepal no longer requires a trekking permit except for a few restricted areas. Visiting Tibet and Bhutan requires a special permit which we will arrange for you. You need to provide your passport information in advance (30- 60 days).
What is a Tea House Trek?
A Tea house Trek is a more convenient trekking style that developed in recent years. Instead of camping, we stay in locally owned small lodges in the trekking areas. These are available in popular trekking areas such as Everest and Annapurna, where lodges are maintained in a decent manner and owned by the local villagers. In this type of trekking, guides, porters, meals and accommodation in lodges are included in the trip package.
What is an All Inclusive Trek?
In this type of trip package, your camping equipments – tents, mattress, sleeping bags, your meals while on trek, local transportation and airfare, guides, porters and their insurance, are included in the trip cost. It does not include your international airfare, your insurance and meals in Kathmandu, and expenses of personal nature.
Is your trekking crew insured?
Our company insures all our trekking staff, including porters.
How is the food on the trips?
On tea house trips and in towns, we dine in the finest local restaurants where we have a variety of local cuisine. On our camping trips, we carry plenty of fresh and canned food with fruits, vegetables and meat. We also carry snacks. Water used on the camps is purified by filter and iodine, or boiled. Special dietary requests can be accommodated upon prior notice.
Can I go trekking in the months of June and July?
Trekking during the monsoon season from June to August is not very good because of heavy monsoon rains and flight delays. But it can be fairly OK in the Himalayan rain shadow like Mustang and Tibet. The road to Western Tibet can be difficult during this time though.
What is the best season for trekking?
The best time for trekking in Nepal is October to early December and March/April. For Bhutan it is April/May and September/October. Flights are often full during this time and trails may be crowded. The best season for trekking in Tibet is April/May and August-October.
Is it necessary to take precautions against Malaria?
It is not necessary to take Malaria prevention medicine unless you will be visiting a Jungle Lodge.
Is previous hiking experience required to go on a trek?
As long as you are in good physical shape, you do not require any hiking experience for short treks. If you are planning a trek longer than a week, you should work out or do long day hikes at home.
How are your trips rated ?
Please see trip grading to choose the right trip for you. We have trips ranging from easy to challenging and beginners to experts. Generally our trips are rated as easy (1), moderate (2), strenuous (3) and challenging (4).
What is acute mountain sickness?
It is necessary that you are aware of the altitude sickness and acute mountain sickness although we will make sure you are safe and comfortable. Our treks are planned to allow time for acclimatizing but it is difficult to calculate for anyone how they will react to high altitudes. On strenuous treks, you are advised to bring your own medical kits and a Gamow (pressure Bags) or we can arrange on rent easily. It is important to descend to lower altitude upon getting acute mountain sickness. For further help our guides and sherpas will be there for you.
