Overview of Pilgrimage of Mount Kailash & Mansarovar

Mount Kailash, located in western Tibet, is revered as the holiest mountain by Asia’s major religious traditions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. It is not only a spiritual epicenter but also the origin of Asia’s four major rivers—Indus, Brahmaputra, Sutlej, and Karnali. These rivers flow in the four cardinal directions, nurturing civilizations as they journey through the region.

In the past, Mount Kailash was out of reach for most due to its remote location and restricted borders, despite its immense cultural and natural significance. However, recent developments have made this sacred region more accessible. Improved road infrastructure in Tibet, enhanced air connectivity in Nepal, and supportive government policies now allow visitors to embark on this journey with ease and comfort.

Helicopter services from Humla in western Nepal have further shortened the route, making it convenient for pilgrims to reach Mount Kailash.

We offer three itinerary options to cater to different preferences and travel needs:

Itinerary Options

1. Entry via Humla: Helicopter to the Border and Drive to Purang

This route through Humla, the historical gateway to Kailash and western Nepal, is the safest and most comfortable option. The moderate altitude of this route allows for better acclimatization before reaching the high-altitude region of Tibet.

Itinerary Highlights:

  • Begin your journey with a brief visit to Kathmandu.
  • Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Simikot.
  • Take a helicopter from Simikot to Hilsa border.
  • Transfer by jeep to Purang (Tibet) and continue to Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash.
  • Complete the three-day circumambulation (Kora) of Mount Kailash.
  • Return via the same route: Hilsa → Simikot → Nepalgunj → Kathmandu.

2. Drive-in Option: Rasuwagadi to Kerung Border

For those seeking a road adventure, this option allows you to drive from Rasuwagadi to the Kerung border, followed by a scenic drive to Mount Kailash.

Itinerary Highlights:

  • Overland drive from Rasuwagadi (Nepal) to the Kerung border.
  • Continue by road to Purang, Manasarovar, and Kailash.
  • Complete the Kora before driving back to Nepal via the same route.

3. Trekking Adventure: Simikot to Hilsa Border and Extended Journey

This itinerary is perfect for trekkers seeking a mix of adventure and spirituality. It offers an authentic experience of western Nepal’s landscapes and cultural richness.

Itinerary Highlights:

  • Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and Simikot.
  • Trek from Simikot to Hilsa border, enjoying the pristine beauty of Humla.
  • Drive from Hilsa to Kailash, and after the Kora, choose to:
    • Drive to Lhasa and fly out, or
    • Return via Kerung and drive back to Nepal.

Why Choose the Humla Route?

The Humla route is ideal for its moderate altitude, which minimizes risks of altitude sickness and allows for better acclimatization. This route not only provides safety but also gives you a glimpse of the rich culture and history of western Nepal.

Let us make your spiritual journey to Mount Kailash unforgettable. Whether you’re seeking convenience, adventure, or cultural immersion, we have the perfect itinerary tailored to your needs.
