Visa Information

Planning for a trek in Nepal is not limited to selecting the right route; you also have to be aware of the visa regulations and processes. In this piece, I will detail everything about acquiring visas meant for traveling to Nepal.

1. Types of Visas

1. Tourist Visa

Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, receives the largest number of foreigners. If you are a tourist or business person, an arrival visa is granted for you. A tourist visa shall be given after your arrival, which can be converted into any other kind if needed.

1.1 Documents Required

To apply for a tourist visa, one should provide:

  • Passport: Validity should extend up to six months,
  • Passport Photos: Two passport-sized photos,
  • Proof of Accommodation: Such as hotel booking details,
  • Return Flight Tickets: Showing your planned departure from Nepal.
  • Visa Application Form: Filled with accurate information
  • Visa Fee Payment: Receipt from bank counter at TIA
  • Online Form Barcode: If you filled out an online visa application.

1.2 Visa Fees

The charges for visas vary depending on staying period;

  • 15 Days – USD 30
  • 30 Days – USD 50
  • 90 Days – USD 125

Once you have completed your visa application form, it will be submitted at the immigration booth. After applying your application will be checked by an immigration officer who tells you where to pay for a visa. A receipt will be offered immediately for immigration counter display and the visa to issue it.

1.3 Online Visa Application Option

It is also possible to fill out the visa application form online before travel, as a way of avoiding long lines at airports during busy periods.

2. Gratis Visa

Some people from certain countries do not have to pay any visa fees. These include:

  • Chinese citizens
  • Children under 10 (other than US citizens)
  • Citizens of SAARC countries (excluding Afghanistan)
  • Non-Resident Nepalese (NRN) citizens
  • Diplomats from Thailand, Brazil, China and Russia

Extending or Modifying Your Visa

The Department of Immigration in Kathmandu does allow extension of stay or change/convert status from visitors’ visas like Tourist Visa” to “Non-Tourist Visa” like business category etc. Renewal of visa is also provided at the Pokhara Immigration Office

2. Important Considerations

2.1 Visa Validity: From the day a visa is issued it remains valid for up to six months.

2.2 Customs Declaration: Upon arrival, any traveler carrying more than $2000 (or its equivalent in foreign currency) must declare it as specified by the Customs Declaration Form.

2.3 Currency: Individuals should carry cash since digital payments may go through challenges.

By figuring out how Nepal’s visa system works, you get an opportunity to concentrate on having fantastic experiences concerning trekking without any tension. It does not matter if you are taking an Annapurna Circuit Trek or checking out the cultural wonders of Kathmandu Valley, when you have the right visa, it will be a great journey.
