Located north of Kathmandu, Helambu is one of the most accessible Himalayan regions in Nepal where there are ample opportunities for trekking and pilgrimage in the stunning landscape with traditional villages and communities. The area takes you up close and personal with the Himalayas (Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lhakpa), whilst also allowing you to experience the rich culture and tradition of ‘Yolmo’ people.
On the trek, you will enjoy the natural landscape: snow-capped mountains, beautiful waterfalls, rhododendron forests as well as cultural landscape: monasteries, villages and hospitable people which are so interlinked in making a beautiful lifestyle of the Himalayas. The local people are most Sherpa and Tamang who coexist peacefully with their Buddhist and Hindu cultures. The area is home to many sacred sites to both religions including Goisakunda lake and a number of caves where Saints such as Padmasambhava and Milarepa are said to have stayed.
The trek begins at relatively low altitude at Sundarijal, a short drive from Kathmandu, passes through Shivapuri National Park, Chisopani, Gulbhanjyang, Kutumsang, Thadepati and Sermathang culminating at Melamchi Pul Bazaar. In addition to beautiful mountain range, you will see amazing Buddhist monasteries and the picturesque rice terraces and local agricultural biodiversity.
Due to the diversity of natrual scenery and the natural hospitality of the Yolmo people, a trek in Helambu offers an extremely rich travel experience whilst being not too demanding and still being accessible.
While the best season for trekking in Helambu is February – May, and August – December, it can also be visited rest of the year too. There is decent mountain accommodation along the trail and is contantly being improved.
